Hooley, Fern Frances Nitzsche
July 24, 1926 - January 12, 2024
Fern Frances Hooley, 97, of New Paris, passed away Friday, January 12, 2024, at home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born July 24, 1926 at home, near Bancroft, Cuming County, Nebraska, to Daniel and Emma (Birky) Nitzsche.
Fern accepted Jesus as her savior and was baptized at age 11 at the Plum Creek Mennonite Church, Beemer, Nebraska. On May 21, 1950, she married Mylin D. Hooley in the same church. He died March 10, 2003.
Survivors include three daughters, Karen (Glenn) Miller of Hutchinson, Kansas, Marjorie (Dale) Martin of Harrisonburg, Virginia and Linda (Greg) Arcibal of Pahoa, Hawaii; four sons, Roger (Lois) Hooley of New Paris, Don (Carlene) Hooley of Bradenton, Florida, Jim (Elaine) Hooley of Wayland, Iowa and Bill (Sue) Hooley of New Paris; 25 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Edna Zook and Ruth Coffman and two brothers, William and Delmar Nitzsche.
Fern was a wonderful role model in her lifetime and was loved by many. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, writing poetry, baking, and sewing. She loved sitting on her back porch and watching the hummingbirds. Many families and friends will cherish the memories made there. Fern’s mind was sharp to the very end and will be remembered for being an avid scrabble player.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 18, 2024, from 2 to 4 and 5 to 7 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, Indiana. The 10 a.m. funeral service will be Friday, January 19, 2024, at Salem Mennonite Church, 23984 C.R. 46, New Paris.
Burial will follow in Salem Mennonite Church Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be given to her church, Milford Chapel or World Missionary Press.
Hoover, Anna Mary Beiler
November 10, 1929 - January 10, 2024
Anna Mary (Beiler) Hoover, 94, was born November 10, 1929 to Isaac K. and Fannie Weaver Beiler in Morgantown, PA. She died January 10, 2024 at Garden Spot Village, New Holland Pennsylvania. On April 7, 1951 she married Herbert J. Hoover of New Carlisle, Ohio.
Anna Mary loved flowers, music, sewing and offering hospitality. She was "Mama" to many. She loved to sing hymns and was faithful in attending church throughout her life. She knew and loved Jesus and wrote "When I pass over after death, I will see Him and be with Him forever."
She is survived by her husband and their children: James (Deborah) of Green Lane, PA; Mary (Aaron) Kolb of Williamsport, PA; Herbert L. of Leola, PA; Grace (Tony) Woodruff of Washington Island, WI; Paul (Shirley) of Harrisonburg, VA; Ruth (David) Lehman of Urbana, MO; Pearl Hartman of Harrisonburg, VA; Carol (Tim) Conrad of New Carlisle, OH and David (Traeln) of New Carlisle, OH; 31 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. She is survived by sisters Martha Dietrich, Naomi Keiper, Verna Mae Buckwalter, Arlene Gipe and brothers Clarence and Elam Beiler. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son-in-law Dwight Hartman and two sisters Ada Ginder and Irene Beiler.
The family is grateful for the loving care she received from the staff of Meadow View. Memorial contributions may be sent to Mennonite Central Committee. Anna Mary donated her body for medical research.

Hoover, Lynnelle Maria Rose
April 12, 1990 - March 16, 2024
Lynnelle Maria Rose Hoover, 33, of Chambersburg, PA passed away Saturday, March 16, 2024 at her home. She was born Thursday, April 12, 1990 in Allen County, OH, the daughter of Susan M. (Hilty) Hoover of Chambersburg and the late Jerry A. Hoover.
Lynnelle graduated from Elida Mennonite School in 2007. She was employed as a nanny for several families and as a lead receptionist in a multi-provider office at LMPC. She was a member of The Living Well Community Church.
She is survived by two sisters; Jessica D.S. (Michael) Derstine of Brownsville, OR; Melissa “Minnie” B.J. Hoover, of Brownsville, OR; three brothers; Joel A.R. (Gwen) Hoover of Chambersburg, PA; Ryan J.A. (Rosanna) Hoover of Aroda, VA and William J.A. (Marilyn) Hoover, of Lima, OH; maternal grandmother Cretora L. (Bear) Hilty of McGaheysville,VA; and 19 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father Jerry A. Hoover, paternal grandparents Arthur and Gladys Hoover, and Louise Hoover, and maternal grandfather Robert Hilty.
A Visitation will be held at Shippensburg Christian Fellowship 10600 Blind Lane, Shippensburg, PA on Tuesday, March 19 from 2:00-4:00 PM and 6:00-8:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at Shippensburg Christian Fellowship with Barry Martin officiating, with a viewing one hour prior.

Hoover, Melvin Lewis
May 28, 1937 - February 16, 2024
Melvin “Mel” Lewis Hoover, 86, of Goshen, went to his heavenly home on Friday, February 16, 2024, at Elkhart General Hospital, after suffering a massive heart attack. He was born at home on May 28, 1937, in Harrison Township, IN, to the late George E. and Kathryn (Schmucker) Hoover. On March 23, 1957, Mel married the love of his life, Georgia May Mattern.
Mel is survived by his children, Melodie (Richard) England of West Des Moines, IA, Kathleen (Sergio) Scataglini of Mesa, AZ, Lynette (Earl) DeYoung of Geneva, IL, Timothy (Kimberly) Hoover of Marshall, WI, and Philip (Joy) Hoover of Covington, LA; 11 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren plus one on the way; siblings, Thelma Martin, Ruth Richards, Eva (Basil) Borntreger, Marie (Ronald) Troyer, Lois Martin, Floyd Hoover, and William (Nancy) Hoover; close friends, Stephen Spite and John Mullet; his beloved “Breakfast Buddies”; and a host of extended family, friends, and church family.
Mel was preceded in death by his loving wife, Georgia Hoover, of 62 years; parents; brother, John Hoover; foster sisters, Shirley Reichelt, and Gladys Hoover; and siblings-in-law, Rufus Martin, Frank Richards, Marty Martin, Arthur Hoover, and Esther Hoover.
Services for Mel will be held at Ironwood United Pentecostal Church, 4609 S Ironwood Rd, South Bend, IN 46614, with visitation on Thursday, February 22, 2024, from 5 to 8 PM. On Friday, February 23, 2024, visitation will be from 10 to 11 AM and the funeral service following at 11 AM. Burial and graveside services will follow at Olive West Cemetery. Pastor Clint Walker will officiate. Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart is handling arrangements for the family.
Mel, along with his wife, owned Hoover’s Cabinet Place for over 30 years, working to remodel many kitchens, baths, and homes throughout the area. The pair were also members of Elkhart Life Church, where Mel served as head usher and board member, and Ironwood United Pentecostal Church for many years.
Mel and Georgia were thrilled to have been able to build their own home from the ground up, and to have visited the Holy Land. In recent years, Mel spent a lot of time with his “Breakfast Buddies”, appreciating the company and laughs that they shared each morning.
Mel will best be remembered as a man who was passionate about his faith and the Bible; he loved a good joke, and enjoyed telling stories and reading his poems to anyone who would listen. He will be missed.

Raymond M. Hoover, 79, Ephrata, passed away surrounded by his family on Friday January 5, 2024 in the Lincoln Christian Home. He was the husband of Verna L. (Horst) Hoover with whom he would have celebrated a 56th wedding anniversary in April. He was born in Ephrata on December 14, 1944 a son of the late Menno W. and Lizzie N. (Martin) Hoover. He was a member of Mountain View Mennonite Church of the Weaverland Conference.
In addition to his wife he is survived by children: Janae L. wife of Glenn H. Martin, Myerstown; Christine J. wife of Nelson H. Martin, Lebanon; Lorene D. wife of J. Wesley Hoover, Lebanon; Karen M. wife of Melvin E. Sauder, Myerstown; 25 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; brother: Clarence M. husband of Elsie L. (Horst) Hoover, New Holland.
He was preceded in death by a son: Kenneth H. Hoover and a sister: Mary Elizabeth Hoover.

Horst, James Daniel
July 15, 1940 - March 18, 2024
James Daniel Horst, 83, of Weyers Cave, passed away Monday, March 18, 2024, at his home after a short battle with cancer.
He was born July 15, 1940, and was a son of the late Lloyd S. and Alice (Heatwole) Horst.
James loved his Lord and was a member of Calvary Mennonite Church. He will be well remembered for his friendly smile, generosity, sense of humor, and love of farming and gardening. He was active in agriculture his whole life. He loved spending time on his mountain land, hunting, and checking his trail cameras. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was united in marriage on May 4, 1962, to Loretta (Sonifrank) Horst, who preceded him in death Aug. 12, 2016.
James is survived by his daughters, Karen (Dan) Hochstetler and Kathy (Greg) Swartz; three grandchildren, Sarah (Owen) Witmer, Kristen Swartz and Caleb Swartz; four great-grandchildren, Lane Witmer, Cheyenne Witmer, Alison Witmer and Laurel Witmer; three brothers, Amos (Leta) Horst, Enos (Debbie) Horst and Reuben (Ruth Ann) Horst; two sisters, Rachel Schrock and Anna (Gary) Miller; sister-in-law, Martha Horst; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Sheldon Horst; brother, Joseph Horst; and brother-in-law, David Schrock.
A graveside service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Bank Mennonite Church Cemetery.
A service celebrating James's life will be held Saturday, March 23, at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Mennonite Fellowship in Mt. Clinton. The service will be livestreamed at https://calvarymennonite.com.

Mary Joyce Horst, 76, of Baring, Missouri passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at her home north of Baring, Missouri. She was born the daughter of Carmi and Emma Mae Eby Stauffer, on March 6, 1947, in Martindale, Pennsylvania.
On September 16, 1967, she was united in marriage to Leon B. Horst and to this union twelve children were born. They moved their family to Missouri in January of 1973 and were members of the Indian Creek Mennonite Church of the Weaverland Conference.
Mary Joyce is survived by husband of more than fifty-six years, Leon B. Horst; eleven children, Marvin and wife Elsie Horst of Novelty, Missouri, Albert and wife Eunice Horst of Baring, Missouri, Savilla and husband Luke Zimmerman of Rutledge, Missouri, Mildred and husband Jason Hoover of Gorin, Missouri, Daniel Horst of the home, George and wife Lou Ann Horst of Cantril, Iowa, Aaron and wife Sarah Horst of Memphis, Missouri, Ruth Horst of the home, David and wife Thelma Horst of Memphis, Missouri, Lester and wife Sharla Horst of Riverton, Wyoming, and Leonard and wife Tana Horst of Memphis, Missouri; fifty-two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Julia Zimmerman of Memphis, Missouri and Lucille and husband Mark Horning of Stevens, Pennsylvania; a brother, Daniel and wife Jane Stauffer of Ephrata, Pennsylvania; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Winston Clay Horst, of East Earl, passed away shortly after birth on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at Women's and Babies Hospital. Winston was the son of Loren E. and Elizabeth N. (Hurst) Horst, of East Earl.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his siblings, Jameson W. Horst, Mikayla G. Horst and Mya E. Horst, all at home, his paternal grandparents; Clair S. and Lorene Z. Horst of East Earl and his maternal grandparents; Daryl B. and Elaine O. Hurst of East Earl.

Hostetler, Darrel M.
January 16, 1933 - January 31, 2024
Darrel M. Hostetler, 91, Goshen, died Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at Greencroft Healthcare. He was born January 16, 1933, in Farmerstown, Ohio, to Atlee & Nettie (Friedt) Hostetler. On August 15, 1954, he married Marian (Brendle) Hostetler.
Surviving him are his wife, Marian, Goshen, two sons, Bruce (Laura Chisholm) Hostetler, Portland, Oregon, Rick (Kim) Hostetler, Goshen, two daughters, Brenda (Rich) Meyer, Millersburg, Anne (Kobi) Menahemy, Oakland, California, ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a sister, Joanne (Nelson) Kilmer, Hesston, Kansas.
Preceding him in death are his parents, his son Alan Hostetler, and four siblings: Anna Hostetler, Robert Lowell Hostetler, Richard Hostetler & Louise Evans.
Darrel was a 1951 graduate of Berlin High School, Berlin, Ohio and a 1955 graduate of Goshen College with degrees in music and theology. He later received an MA in choral music at the University of Iowa and an MDiv from Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary. Over the years he taught music and Bible at Iowa Mennonite School and Bethany Christian High School, served as Executive Director at Walnut Hill Daycare, and administrator at Mennonite Disabilities Committee. He and Marian were missionaries in Nigeria from 1963-1965 and did voluntary service in Eswatini (Swaziland) from 1979-1982. In his later years Darrel worked as a CNA, drove taxi and medical transportation, and volunteered for Meals on Wheels.
A member of North Goshen Mennonite Church, he served as assistant pastor there for a time, and Minister of Music for 36 years. Darrel directed the Evergreen Singers and the MCC Relief Sale Men’s Chorus. Among other things he will be remembered for his love of music, his listening and openness to people and ideas, and his sense of humor.
Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Saturday, February 3, 2024, and for one hour prior to the 4 p.m. funeral service on Sunday, February 4, 2024, both at North Goshen Mennonite Church, 501 N. 8th St., Goshen. Pastor Nick King will officiate. Private burial will be at Benton Lutheran Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to MCC or the Center for Healing and Hope.

Hower, Florence B. Goodman
October 12, 1923 - February 25, 2024
Florence B. (Goodman) Hower, 100, Goshen, died 9:20 a.m. Sunday, February 25, 2024, at Greencroft Healthcare. She was born October 12, 1923, in Elkhart County, to Harry & Emma (Kehr) Goodman. On May 29, 1954, she married Royal J. “R.J.” Hower and he died April 16, 2005.
Surviving are a son, Samuel (Cheri) Hower, Goshen, 6 grandchildren, Emma Martinez, Seantlle Hower, Carla Salinas, Maxwell (Shaun) Paulson, Gordon Paulson, Evelynn (Matthew) Robison, 19 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson on the way.
Preceding her in death are her parents, husband, R.J. Hower, daughter, Luisa Berdejo and 11 siblings.
Florence was a retired nurse at Greencroft Healthcare and La Plata Hospital in Puerto Rico. She was a member of North Goshen Mennonite Church.
A gathering will be 12-2 p.m. Monday, March 4, 2024, with a service following at 2 p.m., all at Rieth Rohrer Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen. Pastors Nicholas King & Jerry Wittrig will officiate. Memorial donations may be directed to MCC (Mennonite Central Committee).

September 21, 1933 - March 15, 2024
Eli N. Huber, 90, of Narvon, passed away on March 15, 2024 in his residence.
Born in Voganville, he was the son of the late Eli M. and Mary Z. (Nolt) Huber.
He was the husband of Emma N. (Leinbach) Huber, with whom he shared 69 years of marriage.
He was a member of Calvary Mennonite Fellowship (Mid Atlantic Conference) and was a retired farmer and truck driver.
Eli is survived by his wife, his children: Anna Mary L. wife of the late Leonard Burkholder of Denver, PA, Leonard L. husband of Arlene M. (Nolt) Huber of Narvon, PA, Daniel L. husband of Eileen H. (Musser) Huber of Narvon, PA, Eunice L. wife of Virgil H. Martin of Colby, WI, Linford L. husband of Anna Ruth (Horst) Huber of Narvon, PA, Wilmer L. husband of Carolyn S. (Brubaker) Huber of Reinholds, PA, Kevin L. husband of Anna Ruth (Musser) Huber of Lyons, NY and James L. husband of Joyce M. (Zimmerman) Huber of Narvon, PA, 57 grandchildren and 148 great grandchildren. Also surviving are his siblings: Lydia N. wife of the late Kenneth Zimmerman of Goshen, IN, Katie N. wife of Enos N. Hunsberger, Donald Paul
April 12, 1931 - January 10, 2024
Donald (Don) Paul Hunsberger (92) died peacefully in his sleep early on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024, at Burkholder House at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community In Harrisonburg, Va. following a general decline in health. Donald was born April 12, 1931, in Telford, Pa. He was the son of Edna (Ruth) and Paul Hunsberger and he was the sixth of nine children.
Donald was married to his beloved wife, Sarah Kathryn Godshall, on Feb. 17, 1950, at Methacton Mennonite Church. Hospitality was their hallmark as they hosted people from all over the world and from many walks of life. His honest (often blunt), but deeply caring (and often misunderstood) demeanor endeared him to many.
Don worked for the AmeriGas company for 35 years, first in the Philadelphia area and later in Northeastern Pa., where they purchased a farm and lived for 38 years. At home he enjoyed hunting and fishing, while at work, as a district manager, he mentored and assisted many. Following their life on the farm they moved to Harrisonburg, where he enjoyed backyard wildlife, tinkering on his John Deere tractor, the Rooster Club, reading and singing.
Donald is survived by his wife, Sarah (92); daughters, Linda (Silas) Booker, Anita (Herb) Weaver, Donna Kim (Mike Cirigliano) Hunsberger, Katrina Jill (Ernie) Didot, who are all residents of the Harrisonburg area. He was loved and admired by his 10 grandchildren: Samuel (Amanda) Booker, Sarah (Adam) Kushner, Katrina (Guy) Kapichok, Mikita (Steven Princenthal) Weaver, Luke (Bethany) Booker, Anda (Andrew Summers) Weaver, Raven Weaver, Ona (Gary) Spicer, Luther Didot and Eva Didot.
He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren: Amelia Booker, Larson, Winslow, and Louis Booker, Theon and Remi Spicer, Avery Weaver Summers, Abigail Kushner, Hailey, Hannah and Harmony Kapichok. Surviving siblings: Ronald Hunsberger, his twin brother, of Souderton, Pa., Arlin Hunsberger of Goshen, Ind., and Merrill Hunsberger of Waterloo, Canada.
Don had an abiding, but raw faith. He joins his late son, Dean Hunsberger, his three sisters and two brothers, who died before him.
Visitation and memorial service will be held at Park View Mennonite Church Jan. 20, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. (Live stream @pvmchurch.org). Friends and family are invited to a luncheon following the service.

Hursh, Morris Martin
August 9, 1936 - February 16, 2024
Morris Martin Hursh, 87, of Lititz (formerly of Brownstown), went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, February 16, 2024, at Landis Homes with his family surrounding him. He was born in Bowmansville, son of the late Joseph S. and Amanda (Martin) Hursh and was the husband of Ruth Ann (Hall) Hursh with whom he shared 63 years of marriage.
Morris loved spending time with his family, friends, and colleagues. He enjoyed traveling, putting puzzles together, watching Phillies games, and spending many winters in Sarasota, Florida. He founded Hursh Painting Co., Inc. which is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year. Because Morris was blessed by his business, he always looked for ways to bless others, supporting many local charities and organizations. He was a member of Ephrata Bible Fellowship Church.
In addition to his wife, Morris is survived by 6 children: David Hursh of Leola, Dale Hursh, husband of Karen of Lancaster, Melissa Lutz, wife of Michael of Ronks, Melanie Wendt, wife of Gerhard of Ronks, Philip Hursh, husband of Sandra of Brownstown, and Colleen DiMatteo, wife of Anthony of Denver; 12 grandchildren: Amanda, Emily, Tiffany, Luke, Heather, John, Tyler, Marissa, Amalie, Teague, Brandon, and Nina; 4 great-grandchildren: Roman, Finley, Sullivan, and Ava; and a brother, Joseph Hursh, husband of Mary of Wisconsin.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Leah (Kilmer) Hursh; a sister, Leah, wife of Melvin Martin of Wisconsin, and a brother, William Hursh, husband of Mabel of Ephrata.
The Hursh family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the loving care given to Morris by the team of caregivers at Landis Homes.
A viewing will be held on Friday, February 23, 2024, from 5 - 8pm at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Rd., Lancaster. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 12pm at Calvary Church. A private interment will be held in the Voganville Union Cemetery, New Holland. Paul Burkholder Hurst, 91, of Ephrata, died at his home on Saturday, February 10, 2024. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Mary (Weaver) Hurst on June 1, 2023.
Born in Ephrata, he was the son of the late Frank M. and Lydia W. (Burkholder) Hurst and stepson to the late Esther K. (Burkholder) Hurst.
A retired farmer, he was a member of Martindale Mennonite Church, Weaverland Conference.
Surviving are four sons: Clair L. husband of Lorraine H. (High) Hurst of Kirkwood, Lawrence W. husband of Eva Jane Z. (Zimmerman) Hurst of Loysville, Paul W. husband of Wilda M. (Hursh) Hurst of Ephrata, Mark W. husband of Kathryn M. (Martin) Hurst of Myerstown, five daughters: Janice W. wife of Nevin Z. Martin of East Earl, Jean W. Hurst of Ephrata, Marie W. wife of George N. Hoover of Elizabethville, Lorene W. wife of Glen R. Martin of Jonestown and Wilma W. wife of Harold M. Wise of Lebanon. Also surviving are 59 grandchildren, 178 great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren, a stepbrother, Ivan B. Hurst husband of the late Mary O. (Martin), Ephrata, and a brother-in-law John Martin, Lancaster.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Noah B. married to the late Mabel (Zimmerman) Hurst, Frank B. married to the late Anna Mary (Good) Hurst, six sisters: Emma B. Horning, wife of the late Aaron Hoover and the late John B. Horning, Katie B. wife of the late John B. Horning, Lydia B. wife of the late Ivan Hoover, Mary B. wife of John Martin, Esther B. wife of the late Elmer Kurtz and John Martin, Alta B. wife of the late Stanley Martin, two step-brothers: David B. Hurst and John B. Hurst, a step-sister, Lizzie B. Hurst, two grandchildren, Miriam wife of the late Wesley Newswanger and Wesley Hurst, five great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
His funeral will be held on Friday, February 16, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. at Martindale Mennonite (Frame) Church with Bishop Amos G. Martin, Joseph Martin, Nathan Martin, Wilmer Hurst, and Frank Horning officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery. Viewings will be held on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Martindale Mennonite (Frame) Church and on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Martindale Mennonite Fellowship Center.
